Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine (VCU) is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

Physicians may claim up to 1.5 hours in Type 1 or Type 2 CME on the Virginia Board of Medicine Continued Competency and Assessment Form required for renewal of an active medical license.

Statement of Educational Need

Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a critical public health issue. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that IPV costs the U.S. $4.1 billion in direct medical costs and another $1.8 billion in indirect costs associated with lost productivity. IPV is more prevalent among women than breast cancer, cervical cancer, or diabetes, and 1 in 3 women reports abuse by a partner at some point in her life.

Although the American Medical Association (AMA) recommends that "questions to assess risk for family violence should be included within the context of taking a routine social history, past medical history, history of present illness, and review of systems as part of emergency, diagnostic, preventive, and chronic care management," survey data indicates that Virginia's physicians are ill equipped to identify and manage the issue in their patient populations. In Virginia's 2006 Intimate Partner Violence Health Care Provider Survey (Virginia Department of Health), almost 75% of providers reported that, to their knowledge, their workplace did not have any written guidelines regarding IPV. Further, almost 65% reported that they do not use screening questions with any patients and less than one-third felt that they had adequate knowledge of referral resources in the community for victims of IPV. The vast majority of providers either didn't know or drastically underestimated the prevalence of IPV in their patient populations., and 89.7% of providers report that they have never been trained on IPV.

Program Goal

Our overall goal is to enable health care providers to effectively recognize and respond to intimate partner violence (IPV) by providing

  2. Training Programs and Specialty-Specific Curricula
  3. Awareness and Educational Materials
  4. Current Research Findings on Intimate Partner Violence
By the end of this training, participants will be able to
  1. Define intimate partner violence (IPV)
  2. Perform specific screening, assessment, and intervention strategies
  3. Identify and formulate responses to challenges specific to the health care setting

Statement of Educational Method

The educational information is presented in one web-based module consisting of 45 slides with a knowledge post-test. Please review the slides and study the content.

After studying the content, please complete the course posttest and the evaluation.

The course posttest and the evaluation instrument are required for credit.

Target Audience

This course is intended for all health care providers who have a unique opportunity to identify victims and provide critical interventions and referrals.

Instructions

    To earn up to 1.5 Category 1 Credits, read the material in the online course carefully. Complete the activity evaluation and answer the posttest questions on the accompanying questionnaire.

    Your credit certificate will be generated automatically upon successful completion of the posttest and evaluation. Participation is confidential.
